“The Lived Experiences of Lesbian-Identified Black Women Navigating Sexual and Reproductive Health Care: A Scoping Review”

(Scott-Henderson, 2025)

ARTICLE SUMMARY: There is very little research on the sexual and reproductive health care experiences of Black lesbian women. Most studies focus on White lesbian women or straight Black women, even though Black lesbian women may have different needs. This review looked at 18 studies to understand their experiences using an intersectionality approach. The studies showed that racism and bias against same-sex relationships often make health care harder to access. Feeling safe to share sexual identity depends on how welcoming providers and clinics are. Trust in health care providers is important for returning to care, and many women and providers underestimate the risk of sexually transmitted infections. Black lesbian women also face social, cultural, and financial barriers to health screenings. These findings show the need for more research centered on Black lesbian women’s voices and health needs.
